    Primary Matters

The Feast of Corpus Christi – The Holy Body and Blood of Christ

    Gospel Acclamation:

“I am the living bread from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats this bread and drink this cup will. Jn 6:51-52

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Message from the Head of Primary

This Sunday is the Feast of Corpus Christi, this feast day recognises the power of the Eucharist. At the heart of this solemnity is the celebration of Christ’s constant presence here on earth, fully alive in the Eucharist.

On Corpus Christ in 2022, Pope Francis reflected on the discreet, yet powerful nature of the Eucharist accounted in the Gospels: “The miracle of the loaves and fish does not happen in a spectacular way, but almost discreetly, like the wedding at Cana — the bread increases as it passes from hand to hand. And as the crowd eats, they realise that Jesus is taking care of everything. This is the Lord present in the Eucharist. He calls us to be citizens of Heaven, but at the same time, he takes into account the journey we have to face here on earth. If I have hardly any bread in my sack, he knows and takes care of it himself."  Pope Francis. This is the true meaning of the Eucharist – that He is here, with us at Mass, present in the priest presiding, the Word proclaimed, and the congregation gathered.  When we gather, we remember all that Jesus has done for us.

    Colour House Day

The six Houses at MCC represent significant places in Mary MacKillop's life; they trace her life story from her birth in Fitzroy, Victoria, to her death in Alma Cottage, North Sydney.  In 2015, College Principal Mr Steve Todd asked the leaders of the time (of which I was one) to expand the story of the Houses so that they would create and extend a passion and fervour for belonging.  Belonging brings a wonderful sense of fraternity, friendship, kinsmanship, and togetherness.  In contemporary times, the Houses are part of the story of who we are as MacKillop people.  When we talk about our Houses, they assist in guiding us in the ‘footsteps of St Mary of the Cross’. Each House has a colour, virtue or value, a scripture reference, a mascot and a foundation story.  Our Australian houses have an associated First Nations story. Colour House Day will be Thursday, 3 July.  Children can dress in the colour of their House, they will gather in their House and, led by the House Leaders, they will care for an area of the Primary playground, picking up rubbish and generally spending time making sure this area is cared for.  This Care for Our Common Home Project is inspired by Pope Francis’ Letter Laudato Si, when he asks us to care for our environment and all that lives within it.  More information will be shared in Compass and on Grade FB Pages.

    NAIDOC Week @ MacKillop

NAIDOC Week will be officially celebrated from 6 – 13 July 2025 during the Term break. At MacKillop, we will share our foundation stories and engage in activities and learning about First Nations People and Culture during Week 10.

This years theme for NAIDOC Week is: The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy

To learn more about NAIDOC Week and how you can become involved please visit the official website: Home page | NAIDOC

Confirmation & Community Mass in Term 3

This coming Sunday, 22 June, our Confirmation candidates begin their first lesson before Bishop Anthony Randazzo celebrates Confirmation with them on Thursday, 31 July. This first lesson begins at 10 am and will continue over four Sundays (with a break over the holidays) in preparation.  The final lesson will take place on Sunday, 27 July, at 4 pm in the church and will include a rehearsal of the ceremony, so the candidates are familiar with the requirements of the ceremony.  Following this rehearsal, candidates and their families are invited to join other Year 3 students and MCC families for the YMCC Mass at 5 pm.  Following the Mass, there will be a free Sausage Sizzle presented by the Parish.  Our Community Mass is a wonderful way for our entire Warnervale MacKillop Community to join together for a celebration of Eucharist. Please put this date in your calendar for early Term 3.

    Grandparents Day

Week 1 of Term 3, on Friday 25 July, we will celebrate Grandparents Day.  This is the day before the Feast of Sts Joachim & Anne, the grandparents of Jesus, on July 26.  We invite all grandparents to attend Open Classrooms from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Then to pray at a Liturgy at 10.15 am in our Church, followed by Morning Tea with their grandchildren. The Morning Tea will be in the COLA with a cake stall open for purchases.  Classes will be brought up by their teachers to the COLA area to purchase cakes. This cake stall is presented by the Year 6 Classes (with support from Year 5) who are raising money for their Graduation Celebration at the end of the year. Year 6 will also display their Portrait Artwork called ‘Inspiring Elders’ in the Library. Please ask your grandparents and significant elders to make themselves available to celebrate this special day on your calendar.

    RSVP here: https://forms.office.com/r/zRbth2V0aK

Kindergarten will also celebrate 100 Days of Kindergarten on this day.

100 is such a big number for Kindergarten, and I know they have been so excited to count toward this significant day in their school journey. Congratulations! Happy 100 Days, Kinder 2025!

    Semester 1 Reports

This Friday, our Semester 1 Reports go home to parents and carers.  These reports capture your child’s learning over the first part of 2025.  I have enjoyed reading the language of the teacher's comments.  Classroom teachers used part of this term to collate and analyse every assessment task, as well as their anecdotal notes on student engagement, to create a summary of student achievement and ability.  I have also paid particular attention to the tables ‘Relationship and Organisation’ and ‘Effort’.  These tables reflect your child’s capabilities as a learner and their willingness to engage in learning.  When you discuss your child’s report with them, ask them to consider one or two of these capabilities to work on in Semester 2.  Encourage them to focus on their effort.  Ask them to consider some ways they can improve in these areas because, even as emerging learners in any content area, they can apply themselves to learning.  This responsibility for themselves as a learner can be applied from Kindergarten through to Year 12 and beyond.  Achievement is, of course, important, and I applaud learners who succeed in knowing and applying learning in a variety of ways.  However, hard work and effort can also bring about achievement and students who apply themselves effectively create success.  Congratulations to all of our students who tried their very best, and future blessings to those who see areas for improvement and work to make them happen in Semester 2.   I look forward to catching up with many families at our Parent/Teacher Interviews in Week 9.

    Leadership Speeches

Last Friday, I was proud to attend the Leadership speeches nominating for the College Captain in 2025/26.  Secondary Leadership begins at the end of Term 3 as our current leaders hand over the baton to the incoming parliament.  Standing in front of the student body, teachers, and leaders requires enormous courage, a positive outlook and some help from the Holy Spirit.  All of the young speakers did an amazing job, and on many occasions, I was moved to tears.  As with many classes at MCC, I taught this cohort in Year 3, and to see them now filled my heart with pride and joy.  Our College is in good hands as these young people look to this role.  The message I received from all the speakers was a willingness to serve their community, act as role models for their peers, and give back to the place that had shaped them into the adults they are today.  I want to thank all the speakers and ask you to pray for their leadership in the weeks and months ahead.

    Assembly in Week 10

Please note that our final Primary Assembly for Term 2 will be on Wednesday, 2 July at 9 am.  The change of date is due to our Parent/Teacher Interview Day on June 27.  On this day, we will present our Age Champion Medallions, the House Trophy, Assistant Principal Awards and our final class awards for Term 2.  Please join us if you are able for this final celebration of learning and achievement for the term.

    Blessings for a wonderful week

Kerry Power | Head of Primary

Outdoor Recreation Students visit 4 Banksia

Last Thursday, a group of Year 10 students from three Central Coast CSBB secondary schools studying Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation visited MacKillop. 4 Banksia was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in cooperative games led by the visiting students as they progress towards becoming Outdoor Guides.

The course is one of several Vocational Education Training (VET) courses offered under the CSBB banner of Student Achievement: Pathways and Partnerships. As the Registered Training Organisation (RTO), CSBB partners with Australian Outdoor Education, who provide all equipment, additional guides, logistics and ground support.

The students of 4 Bankia participated in a number of fun and challenging activities, building their teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. The enjoyment and participation our students displayed was acknowledged by the course leader.

Thank you to the Outdoor Recreation students for leading our students with confidence and enthusiasm. We wish you every success with your course and look forward to seeing you again in the future as qualified Outdoor Guides.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available within the school about the supports provided to students with disabilities. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

    • Year of schooling
    • Category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
    • Level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

    This information assists schools to:

    • Formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
    • Consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
    • Develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child, and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

    Staffing Update

Just an update on Secondary School staff:

    • I am currently on Long Service Leave, and Mrs Chrystal Price is stepping up into the role of Acting Head of Secondary.
    • Mr Ashley Sadler is stepping up into Mrs Price's role as acting Deputy Head of Evangelisation and Catechesis.
    • Mr Alex Langbridge is taking the acting role of Assistant HSIE Leader of Learning and Teaching in the absence of Mr Andrew Mace, who is on leave for 4 weeks.
    • On return to Term 3, Mrs Tanya Appleby will be taking two weeks leave and I will step into the role of College Principal while Mrs Appleby is away. Mrs Price and Mr Sadler will continue in their temporary appointments.

I would like to recognise the service of Mrs Peeta Gainsford, who has decided to take a new journey beyond education that better suits the needs of her family. We have been fortunate to have Peeta serve our community in both the Primary and Secondary schools, and we have benefited from her agility and sustained efforts.

During Term 2, we have also had Miss Kate Moody completing a work experience program, specifically supporting our front office administration staff in the print room and other areas of the College. Kate was supported graciously by Mrs Nadine Huxtable, and we are pleased to report that Kate performed her duties sensationally.  We wish Kate all the best and hope that her experience at MacKillop will help secure future employment.

I look forward to returning in Term 3.

    God bless,

Paul Lynch | Head of Secondary

    Secondary Mission Update

This week we were privileged to witness various students who have applied for student leadership in the area of Mission. Quite a few students from Years 7-11 met in the Ryan Centre at break on Monday 16 June and before a panel consisting of Sr Jiji, Mr Sadler, Mr Hodgson, Mrs Price and Year 12 Cabinet leaders, the candidates presented their speeches on why they should be selected as a Pharus or Social Justice leader.

All students represented themselves exceptionally well, and it was fantastic to hear about the amazing initiatives in which they are involved. It was refreshing to hear about the love of YMCC, JUMP and Mini Vinnies. There was a lot of enthusiasm to continue the amazing work already happening in these specific areas. No matter the outcome, we are extremely proud of every student who had the courage to put their name down for leadership and to give their speeches. All the students who applied for Mission are all leaders in our eyes and we hope you continue to shine your light on our MCC community.

The Fun Never Stops in the Performing Arts

This term, we are excited about our upcoming eisteddfods. Primary and Secondary Dance Troupes are preparing for Dance X at Laycock St Theatre next weekend (28 June) and Movement Dance (TMDC) in July. Students should have already received information about Dance X. TMDC information will be available shortly. We are also super excited about our Secondary Choir eisteddfod coming up in August. This is our first vocal eisteddfod in many years, and we are very proud of the Secondary Choir, who are currently preparing two contrasting pieces with which to compete. Notes and more information will be sent to the choir early next term.

The Year 10 band recently entered the Central Coast Council’s Battle of the Bands and performed at Erina Fair in one of the qualifying rounds. This band rocked the Hub Youth Entertainment Venue and are now waiting for the rounds to finish to hear if they will progress to the next stage. We wish them all the best in this new venture.

As we come to the end of the term, our academic classes are finalising their assessments, having developed their skills and knowledge throughout the first semester. In our elective subjects in particular, the students are beginning to feel more confident in their abilities and are producing some lovely work. We look forward to sharing some of the performances developed throughout the year with you in our end-of-year showcase.

The new performing arts representative polos and the performing arts t-shirts have all arrived. All students who ordered the polo have received theirs; however, I still have quite a few t-shirts that have not been collected. High school students can collect from the West Wing staffroom. I will send Primary orders to their classroom.

    Preparing a Bibliography

When completing research tasks, you will be required to cite (or reference) your work and, at times, create a full bibliography or reference list of all the sources you’ve used to support your research. It gives credit to the original creators and allows readers to follow up your sources. Proper referencing helps you avoid plagiarism and improves the credibility of your work.

    What a Bibliography Should Include:

List every source you used to:

    • Find facts or statistics
    • Explore ideas or opinions
    • Use quotes or paraphrasing
    • Reference media like images, videos, or websites

    Key Referencing Principles:

    • Use a consistent referencing style such as APA 7th edition or Chicago Style.
    • Format your final reference list alphabetically by the surname of the first author.
    • Do not divide sources by type or use a table.

A reference should include details such as the author of the book or website, the name of the site or resource, the date it was published (for a website, you should also include the date you accessed it, as websites are regularly updated), and the publisher. All of these details provide specific evidence of your research and support your work’s credibility.

    Examples:

    Books:
Frankopan, P. (2015). The Silk Roads: A new history of the world. Bloomsbury.

    Websites:
CSIRO. (2020, December 22). Marine biodiversity. Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. https://www.csiro.au/en/research/natural-environment/oceans/Marine-biodiversity [Accessed June 17, 2025]

    Videos / Streaming Media:
CrashCourse. (2023, April 5). The French Revolution: Crash Course World History #29 [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTTvKwCylFY

    Podcasts:

Hughes, T. (Host). (2025, May 31). Pompeii: The Buried City (No. 550) [Audio podcast episode]. In The Ancients. History Hit. https://shows.acast.com/the-ancients/episodes/pompeii-the-buried-city

    Useful Tools:

    • Microsoft Word: Use the References tab to insert and manage citations.
    • Citation Generators such as:
      • CiteThisForMe
      • ZoteroBib
      • MyBib

    Checklist for Evaluating Online Sources

    Ask yourself:

    1. Who is the author or organisation?
    2. Are they qualified or reputable in this field?
    3. Is the information up to date?
    4. Is the content objective and reliable?
    5. Does the site use references or evidence?
    6. Is the domain credible? (e.g. .edu, .gov, .org)
    7. Will this source help answer your research question?

    Final Tips

    • Start your reference list as you research; don’t wait until the end.
    • Keep track of URLs, titles, authors, and dates accessed for digital sources.

    Parent-Teacher Interviews

A reminder that our Parent-Teacher Interviews will take place on Thursday and Friday of Week 9. These meetings offer a valuable opportunity for families to engage in meaningful conversations with teachers about student learning, progress, and future goals.

Students and families will receive the reports prior to the interviews. This should provide a starting point for reflection and discussion prior to these interviews. These meetings can then provide a chance to celebrate achievements, address any concerns, and explore strategies to support continued growth. They also help to strengthen the partnership between home and school, ensuring students feel supported both academically and emotionally.

For families of senior students in Years 11 and 12, these interviews are equally important. With final assessments and exams approaching, now is the ideal time to check in, ask questions, and plan the next steps together.

We encourage all parents and carers to attend. Your involvement sends a powerful message to your child that their learning matters and that we’re all working together to support their success.

Bookings are still open. Please visit your Compass portal to secure a time.

Year 8 into Year 9: Choosing Electives for Stage 5

Next Term, our Year 8 students will begin preparing for Stage 5 by selecting their elective subjects for Years 9 and 10. This is a significant step in each student’s educational journey, as they begin to personalise their learning and explore areas of interest that may shape their future pathways.

Electives in Stage 5 not only enhance the learning experience but can also influence subject selections in senior years and beyond. To support this process, we will hold an information session in Term 3, Week 1 on Thursday.

Students will receive the course handbook prior to the evening. During the session, families and students will have the opportunity to speak with teachers about the courses on offer, what is involved, and the expectations. This evening is designed to help students make confident and well-informed decisions. Please make sure you save Thursday, 24 July, Week 1, in your calendar.

Alexandra Walters | Deputy Head of Secondary, Student Achievement

    Secondary - Representative Sports

    Representative Sports

Week 8 finishes with many representative sporting teams going out to represent the College. Our students have been exceptional. The College Rugby League U14’s, Cross Country, Oztag teams compete in the CSBB, and regional gala days.

The College’s major carnivals, Swimming (completed), Cross Country (completed) and our College Athletics, held on Wednesday, 18 June 2025, at Mingara Athletics Centre. Results will be published in the next edition.

The Age Champions and House Champions are yet to be known. They will be finalised by the end of Term 2 and announced at an assembly in Term 3.

How can a student represent MacKillop?

Sign-ups will be sent via Compass, where the student will register. The Coach (teacher) will hold a meeting / trial / training to then select teams.

    What’s next?

The student will need to make meetings / selection trials / training sessions

If a student’s behaviour at school has been ongoing, they will be less likely / to represent the College. If a student is selected into a team and is unfortunately suspended from school (internally or externally), they will not be able to represent the College or the Pathway (CSBB or NSW CCC teams). This occurs in all schools; this is not just Mackillop. Thank you for your understanding.

CSBB (Catholic Schools Broken Bay Sport)

During Weeks 6 and 7, we saw students representing the College as individuals at CSBB Cross Country, Netball (9/10, Open Boys and Girls). The College Oztag teams have been competing in the Central Coast Regional competitions. Our U13 Boys and the Under 14 Girls Rugby League teams competed, as well as the U13 Boys and Girls Soccer teams.

    NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC)

How does a student get selected? The first way, via school representation, students will be selected into the College team, then selected to represent the CSBB Broken Bay team at the NSW CCC carnival, where a NSW Combined Catholic Colleges team will be selected.

The second way is for a student to register as an individual. This can be achieved by registering through the CSNSW Sport portal at https://csnsw.sport/.

Congratulations to Seth on his selection into the NSW CCC Cross Country team

    Central Coast Regional Oztag Championships

Congratulations to the Oztag teams that represented the College last week at the Central Coast Regional Oztag Championships.

    7/8 Girls OzTag Team

Our talented team were runners-up at the Central Coast OzTag Regional Championships on Tuesday.

They went undefeated in the round games, taking a hard-fought 3-1 win over St Joseph’s in the quarters, followed by a solid 2-0 victory against St Brigid’s in the semi-final. Despite a tough battle in the grand final, the girls were defeated by Central Coast Sports College. Top 2 teams qualify — so we’re off to STATE at the end of August! Well done, girls.

Central Coast Isabelle Kelly – City Cup

Well done to our Under 14 Girls Rugby League team. The girls played some excellent rugby league throughout the day. Taking on Erina in the first round and taking out the win 16 -0, going down to Berkeley Vale 10 – 0. The girls narrowly missed the semifinals. Their next competition will be in Term 3.

Name a person you admire in your sport or areas of interest?

I admire Keisha Gofers, who has been to several Olympic Games and was one of my under-16 water polo coaches for Sydney Uni. She’s an amazing athlete and became a Mum in 2023, then proceeded to train extremely hard to make the Aussie Stingers, who won Silver at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

She is so supportive and encouraging to all young women in our sport.

Name 3 people you would invite to share lunch with and why?

Keisha Gofers & Tilly Kearns as they are my favourite players. And the coach of the Australian Stingers, so I can get some tips on what I need to do to make that a goal.

JUMP - Josephites Undertaking Mission Project

This Term, students across the College have continued to engage in meaningful acts of service through the JUMP (Josephites Undertaking Mission Project) program, making a real impact both within the school and in the wider community.

At Toukley Neighbourhood Centre, students have been regularly volunteering their time to unpack OzHarvest deliveries and pack hampers for individuals and families in need. These visits offer students a powerful opportunity to respond directly to issues of food insecurity and connect with the local community.

JUMP Earth Care has been thriving, with students from Years 7–12 coming together every Wednesday morning during Pastoral time to maintain and care for the school’s gardens and outdoor spaces. Their work is helping to create a more sustainable and welcoming environment for everyone at MacKillop, and their dedication each week has been outstanding.

Our Winter Appeal Canned Food Drive is also underway, supporting Mary Mac’s Place in Woy Woy, which provides meals and support to those experiencing homelessness and hardship. Each year group has been asked to contribute specific items:

    • Year 7 – 2 Minute Noodles
    • Year 8 – Canned Soups
    • Year 9 – Canned Tuna
    • Year 10 – Canned Beans and Spaghetti
    • Years 11 & 12 – Microwave Rice and Baked Beans

Thank you to all families who have already contributed—your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Earlier this Term, we had the pleasure of welcoming residents from Loretto Gardens Retirement Village to the College for a special high tea. This event was hosted by our JUMP sport students alongside the Year 10 and Year 11 Hospitality classes. It was an afternoon of connection, conversation, and community, and a wonderful example of service in action.

Later this Term, Year 6 students will be introduced to the JUMP program and invited to participate in their own outreach initiative by visiting Loretto Gardens. This upcoming experience will allow them to begin their own journey of service and social justice.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support and participate in JUMP. Together, we are building a community shaped by compassion, action, and care for others.

CatholicCares Vacation Care programs offer a wide range of activities catering to children of different ages, interests and needs. We also head out and about on a range of local excursions.

The environment that they provide is stimulating and enjoyable, with activities that harness the children’s interests and strengths, while respecting their need for leisure.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to respond to this email or speak to the OSHC Coordinator at your school.
